RE: Re: Bob Merchant
  Geoffrey D Dean

Greetings All,I am very sorry to hear of Bob's misfortune.
He told me some years ago that he had a condition where one should not
walk near the edge of a platform as one might just step off the edge.
If anyone is able to see Bob, please pass on my best wishes for his
recovery.
I, like so many others, have known Bob since the 1960s.
He and others frequently came to Melbourne for special rail and tram
events.
My thoughts and best wishes are with Bob at this time.
Regards,
Geoff.

Thanks for that Peter. Not a good thing to happen to someone in his
early 80s and who lives alone. Although Bob is not part of the TDU
community, I’m sure everyone on here would wish Bob all the best in
his recuperation and rehabilitation.

Hi Paul,

From he museums face book site:

One of the Museum's stalwart Members and an instantly recognisable
name in the Australian Tramway Preservation Movement, Robert (Bob)
Merchant has met with some misfort over the weekend.

Bob is a wealth of information about Sydney's trams was General
Manager of the Museum in the 1960's and early 1970's and has held
various senior positions within the Museum for over 60 years.
He has been editor of the Museum's 'Trolleywire' magazine, Australia's
premier tramway historical journal for some 50 years.

Unfortunately, Bob had a nasty fall on Saturday afternoon and broke
his hip.  He had a hip replacement at Sutherland Hospital on Sunday
and remains there recovering.  He hopes to move to a repatriation
hospital nearer to his home late this week or early next week.  Bob
doesn't own a Mobile Phone, so he is pretty hard to contact.  However
you can ring Sutherland Hospital and they will attempt to get a phone
to him.  Otherwise, you can visit him at Bed 15 in Jara Wing of
Sutherland Hospital, Caringbah. (Visiting hours 8am - 8pm - make sure
you wear a mask!)

He was in pretty good spirits today when I visited him, but with the
medications wearing off, he was in a little pain.
