There ya go with the comments.

BTW you don’t have to subscribe to the SMH to read it - use “private browsing”, read your allocation of free articles till they’re used up, then close that window and open a new window and continue to read, opening a new window each time the allocation is used.

To replace 8,000 diesel buses with electrical buses over the next decade will require the NSW Government to purchase 800 buses/year.

That's a lot higher than the proposed purchase of 50 buses in 2021.

At 800 buses per year it is patently obvious that local bus builders could not meet that delivery rate. More overseas purchases of "off the shelf" buses. Let us hope they are, at least, Right Hand Drive and comply with Australian Road Regulations, especially all up weight restrictions or will we just get road destructor overweight models?

A further issue will be the disposal of the existing fleet, half of which will be less than half way through their expected life. This will mean that millions of dollars of taxpayers funds will be written off.

Remember these are electric buses with few moving parts and so very easy to assemble. Why do you think it’s not possible to make 2 buses per day? The site purchased for the manufacture of these buses in Moss Vale is 50 hectares in size.

Probably left hand drive as the procurement people use pictures reversed.

"A further issue will be the disposal of the existing fleet".

No problem at all, just take them out and sink them next to the Freshwater ferries.

Unless powered from renewables (which could happen one day) electric buses are almost as bad for climate change as diesel.

When this was looked at a few years ago, the change to electric vehicles still reduced emissions (except, at the time, in Victoria, due to brown coal). Electric motors are considerably more efficient than diesel engines, which has a lot to do with it.

Pleas do some research. EVs are over 90% efficient compared to Diesel engines which are around 35% efficient. Plus, every time a bus brakes about 30% of the kinetic energy is converted to electricity and put back into the battery.

NSW government has poor form with public transport infrastructure. Are the buses going to be manufactured in Australia? Will they even fit on the roads and under overpasses? Will people be able to comfortably stand in them?

Poor form? They've delivered more than the last lot did and it's changed the city for the better. The ferries do fit underneath the bridges on the Parramatta River while the intercity trains were purchased with the intention of improving the Blue Mountains corridor to match the rest of the network. Research please.....

Yes, they’ll be made in Moss Vale by a company called a Nexport.
Trial buses have been running in Sydney for the past year with rave reviews from drivers, passengers and NSW government. To date, nobody has complained that they couldn’t stand up.

This certainly will improve our city environment considerably. Diesel busses are noisy and dirty, electric busses should make bus corridors considerably more attractive.

Congratulations to Mr Constance for this initiative.

Your congratulating him way to early, ferries don't fit under bridges,
trains that don't fix stations and the dumbest mistake, light rail that's not interchangeable with each other.

What about expanding light rail to Coogee, Bondi Bronte and La Perouse?
Maybe even stage 2 of Parramatta light rail.
All electric and easily sourced by solar ( like Melbourne trams)
How about going all the way?

Isnt most of the bus network already or soon will be privatised? Does this mean the long suffering tax payer meets the cost again for the benefit of private operators?

No, buses and all assets remain in the hands of the state government. The operating contracts will be outsourced. Nothing has been sold or privatised. Please don't spread untruths.

Yes.
If the government mandates it, then the private operators have to comply or drop out, though. If the government is mandating the change on our behalf, then I guess it's not unfair for the government to pay, as long as the contracts are watertight and the new buses come back to government ownership if the private operator closes or stops operating public services.

I beiieve buses should be brought back under public ownership, but that's not going to happen, and the electric bus fleet must be brought about. So we just have to wear it.

The way the contract model works in NSW is the government essentially owns the vehicles and the private operator is paid to operate and maintain them to a timetable and routes set by the government.

So government buys or at the very least funds the buses anyway.

maybe the Feds could call for some Aussie innovators to look at building these here, along with NSW, there is scope for thousands needed for other states and long into the future. Maybe the Minister for Jobs and Innovation could take charge, michaelia being a huge fan of EV's.

Despite the usual whinging in the comments, this is a great move.

And the benefits are more than just climate, since electric buses require far less maintenance than diesel versions and will thus be cheaper to run in the medium to long term.
