They are almost certainly the contactors for the power-operated points just
immediately north of the bridge. Clayfield trams turned left there, and
Ascot trams turned right. This photo seems to be of a gunzel tour.

The same intersection also had a complicated double-track round-the-block
loop for Albion Park Racecourse special trams. I don't know if the entry to
that (basically straight ahead where the other lines went left and right)
had its own powered points or used manual methods. Probably the latter
given the infrequent use.
