A couple of things Tony P forgot to mention in his generic anti-labor diatribe is this proposal was supported at the federal level by Tom Uren and the department of urban and regional development, which obviously didn’t continue past 11/11/1975. No-one else apart from Milton Morris in the corrupt Askin government was keen on the idea and as a consequence of promoting this Morris was shanghaied out of the transport portfolio in 1975. He was lands minister and then decentralisation minister till the coalition was kicked out in 1976. After Morris the transport minister was the country party hack Wal Fife, an idiot rustic stooge of the road transport industry (deregulated by the Askin government, which moved freight onto roads from rail, damaging the roads and increasing the deaths of other road users) and someone with no interest whatsoever in returning trams to Sydney. Any suggestion that the liberal party was seriously interested in supporting the return of trams to Sydney in 1974, with the support of the Whitlam government’s DU&RD (a government the NSW state government contrived to frustrate by appointing liberal party lackey Cleaver Bunton to the senate instead of a labor appointee when Lionel Murphy moved to the high court) is just fatuous and absurd. The NSW government had a fight with DU&RD over stupid and destructive urban freeways so wasn’t going to take on a tramway proposal that was the antithesis of their preferred mode.

Apart from this, the Askin government disaster the NSW Public Transport Commission, fronted by the anti-rail English drunk and Beeching creature Phillip Shirley (another example of Askin contempt for Morris) wasn’t doing anything for for the trains, buses and ferries except painting everything blue and white. The Shirley appointment was yet another example, continuing to the present, of NSW governments of both parties (both are equally bad when it comes to this) scraping the dregs at the bottom of the British public transport management barrel and coming up with the worst of the worst, again and again
