Numerous tram lines in Sydney were still making a profit at the end of
their service. Various creative accounting efforts, led by the Department
of Government Transport's Commissioner and militant bus advocate Stan
Berry, were used to conceal these facts and present the replacement buses
in a better light - and of course the press uncritically swallowed this
information.
Incidentally, somebody in Melbourne with a research bent may be interested
to pursue the MMTB's involvement in a 1970s proposal to bring trams back to
the Sydney CBD, preparing a report called "Central Sydney Tramway -
Feasibility Study" (MMTB September 1974). The report was commissioned by
the Liberal Minister for Transport, Milton Morris, and the MMTB was
approached because the previous Labor government had purged all the tramway
expertise from the agency after 1961. Unfortunately, Labor got back into
power in 1975 and that was the end of Morris' proposal.
