This was the 2nd failure of an 'autonomous power' tram in NSW. Last year one of the capacitor modules on a Newcastle Urbos caught on fire. The tram had just run out of service and caught fire in the depot yard. The resulting large quantities of smoke resulted in a neighbor calling the fire brigade but they were not required as the internal fire systems on the power module kicked in and contained the fire. The capacitor module was extensively damaged and the entire storage module was swapped out. I understand the damaged module was crated up and sent back to CAF Power in Spain for forensic analysis.

It would appear as the onboard protection systems 'contained' the failure an external ONSRS/ATB investigation of the Newcastle incident isn't required, but the Sydney one, since it blew the battery box cover clear off the car and hence was an 'un-contained' event, it has to be independently investigated.
