Ernie Dingo: 'The thing that upset me was that word' June 18, 2020
At 63 years old, Ernie Dingo says racial slurs are something he has been dealing with his whole life, but being abused once again at a Perth train station on Wednesday – and the treatment of the incident in the media – was the last straw.
The well-known Australian actor spoke to 6PR's Breakfast with Steve and Basil on Thursday morning following the altercation that made national news. And he was still angry.
Ernie Dingo.
Describing how the events unfolded, Dingo said he had been about to get on a train at Perth's central station when a man made the offensive remark.
"As you can see by the media, they don't want to print the f-word," Dingo told Basil Zempilas and Steve Mills, who made the decision to air the racist comment in its entirety.
He said the media was careful not to offend people with disabilities but had no issue with spelling out racist slurs about Aboriginal people, saying "that's the word that ticked me off."
"The thing that really upset me was that word."
video Ernie Dingo does not regret response to racist slur
Australian actor Ernie Dingo has said he does not regret his response to a racist slur after a train station clash.
Dingo said he asked the man to repeat what he had said, and told him to "say it loud so everyone can hear and give me a reason to whack you", but the man "wouldn't repeat it because he didn't think an old man could catch him".
Dingo also said a "young fella" had told him to leave the man alone because he was "retarded".
"Well if he is gunna say that shit to me, I’ll have a go at him," Dingo wrote in a social media post that was widely shared after the incident.
"I’m 63. I don’t take that shit from anyone."
On Thursday, Dingo said he had been called all kinds of racial slurs since he was a kid.
"I normally turn a blind eye to it, you hear it all the time, sooner or later you're gonna have to retaliate."
Dingo also took issue with the incident being reported as having been "violent", despite his written account stating he had "whacked" the man who made the slur on his head.
"It wasn't a strike," he said on Thursday morning.
"It was a push. That's what I meant by 'whacked him'. There was no violent stuff.
"It was like a sucker punch."
Dingo said he had not felt there was any point in making a complaint about the slur because "cops don't do anything about someone being racially abused".
"Why do people have to be the way they are?" he said.
"What's sad in their life?"
When asked for further comment, Dingo's management said he declined to speak to WAtoday, saying the previous day's report was "disappointing" because the F-word had been censored while the racial slur hadn't.
She said the different treatment of the words had make Dingo believe one was more offensive than the other "while not condoning the use of either of those words".
