Interestingly it has a 1937 date on it, by which time R1s were well on the
streets. It's almost like Brisbane asked for a copy of drawings for an R1
while they were working up the FM design and then somebody in Sydney
unwittingly sent up an outdated drawing.
I've no doubt the R1 evolved from the R through a series of draft drawings
and the bulkheads probably stayed in the drawings until deleted in the
final version. As mentioned in older discussion, Maclean wanted a corridor
car with doors at the ends and in the centre. For various reasons there was
compromise but, while the R was clearly a dropcentre with compartments,
it's a stretch to describe the R1 as a dropcentre. It's better described as
a corridor car with a lowered vestibule in the centre, the reason for that
being to avoid having a step inside the doorways.
