St Vincents Plaza is a pinch point, because of the Brunswick & Gisborne St curves. The E's hang over at each end of the platform, if the E's are 35m the available platform must be 34m. I have seen tip to toe 11 behind a 30 going straight snookered by a 12 behind a 109 out of Gisborne. Watched the drivers get out and see if there was clearance(only cm's) for the 109 to proceed straight down Vic Parade as the 30 was blocked towards Spring St. see Rt 11 E turning into Brunswick St at https://www.google.com.au/maps/place/Gisborne+St,+East+Melbourne+VIC+3002/@-37.8083132,144.9760717,146m/data=!3m1!1e3!4m5!3m4!1s0x6ad642c4f071e90d:0xd4cc4e8e0ef101cd!8m2!3d-37.8094893!4d144.9757069

I presume the issue on the north-south streets of the Hoddle grid is the half-blocks of the "Little"streets. However, they're about 100 metres which is room for even a CSELR type platform. The Bridge St stop in Sydney is in a block that's little more than the length of the platform. There would be little issue for a 45 metre or even 60 metre platform in Melbourne.
