Re the odd move by 552, I was chatting to Barry N yesterday and he as an explanation which almost certainly is correct....
The driver of 552 left the terminus around in Victoria St too early, so the Signal Box Braid told the driver to go back, probably because he left ahead of a tram due out before him.
This would explain why the gent abandons ship, and goes back to the tram stop in the foreground to await the first tram south. The Connie should have told the man what was happening earlier.
Barry knows, as once he accidentally left Victoria St 4 minutes early. The Signal Box Braid was not so kind to him - Barry was told to go down to Latrobe St then come back, making him late second time around.
One evening running late on the 15 nightmare to St Kilda Beach I gave myself No. 1 shunt while the indicator said to go to 2.
This upset the Braid who I won’t name as he is known amongst TDU readers. His revenge to me was to not give me the T light to go until the second traffic light phase 😡
