Bingo! I was on that tour. It ran on Saturday, 29 July, 1972. L 101 was used ex South Melbourne Depot and ran to/along Holden Street, Moreland, Sydney Road, City-Elizabeth Street, Footscray, West Maribyrnong and the Showgrounds Loop, before returning to South.
Happy snap 04658 shows 101 terminating in the Moreland stub; 04659 is a view of 101 through the Moreland Road railway gates--Lindsay Bounds is behind 101 and at right, Tony Smith talks to Ron Scholten and (I think) Lindsay Adams; 04660 has 101 on the stub being passed by a down 2-car Tait electric set arriving at Moreland station.

This triggered a memory, and I found a report on this tour with L 101 in the October 1972 issue of Trolley Wire.
It’s on pages 17-18 :

The other items referred to in the report are the W3 and W4 withdrawals, along with PCC 980, which was at the time to be either converted to resemble a W7, or scrapped if not viable to do that.
Also mentioned was the MMTB tendering for 100 new trams, and Preston building 1041using 980’s electrical and running gear.
Curiously the date of the tour with 101 isn’t recorded.
