Brunswick and Preston depots had what was called a split roster. New arrivals worked the Ws on Lygon Street and Brunswick Street respectively and it was an unpaid promotion to later become a Z driver.

Nevertheless for Brunswick at least, there was one afternoon run and I think one morning run of a W on route 19, the purpose being to keep the Lygon Street crews familiar with Sydney Road so they could effectively work sporting extras along that street.
