That said nothing, not even spin. Is Melbourne the largest tram system in
the world? We have the debate every year: what is the measure? Track km?
Route km? Number of trams? Number of seats? Number of passengers per
week?
Either the free-tram zone shouldn't exist at all, or it should go to
logical tourist boundaries (Royal Exhibition Building, Arts Centre, Crown
Casino, NCG, even if not Royal Melbourne Hospital).
It was a political pork barrel from a Liberal government to favour its
voters, who drive to the city, and want free transport to lunchtime
restaurants. Real commuters have paid for all-day transport already.
