681201Su Bardon (Brisbane, Qld): Locals decorating the last tram to leave this terminus, dropcentre 370, (Roderick Smith).
There was a party mood prevailing. As fast as some were decorating, others were removing bits as souvenirs (handgrips, window bars). Somebody souvenired the control handle. It was returned. I can't recall now if departure was before midnight or after. The choice was to get a photo, or get a spot aboard. I got both, but the spot gave little vision of progress, so I have few memories of the journey. We did all fit: there was nobody riding on top of the car. I don't recall any singing of Auld Lang Syne. That may have been reserved for ceremonies at Light St Depot, which we may have missed because of the late departure. There was some uncertainty outside the depot. Would be be allowed to ride in? There may have been a change to a ceremonial figure for that last move, certainly not Mayor Clem Jones whom the mob would have lynched if he attended. We did ride in, with only two enthusiasts on 370. The others may have chosen a different route. My memory is that a SPER contingent had chartered a dreadnought for the day, but I never saw it. I did see a chartered FM, but that may have been a community group. The end was fairly damp: because of the lateness, officials and police were keen to have us off the premises promptly.
