Re: World's only operational Purrey steam tram still puffing along in Rockhampton

I think there were several examples of heavy rail in a paved Street in the street in Queensland I think Bundaberg a short distance, Maryborough, Woolloongabba, Newstead.
The two foot sugar cane lines also ran along the streets of Nambour and I think they still run along the streets of Mossman.

Also in South Australia there was Semaphore, Port Pirie, the original Glenelg railway which became the tramway.
In NSW I think there was rail along the streets of Yass.

There may have been an example or two in Victoria and Tasmania.

Sorry Brent, I believe there is no mixed running although it looks like that did happen at least once in the early days after the Purrey started running. In fact from memory after the initial runs, it spent years sitting inside the bus depot.

Denison St railway used to be double track but is now single. However part of the eastern track remains running north and south of the old Archer Park rail station which is now the museum base. There was no physical connection between the two tracks. Google Earth appears to confirm this.

Some years ago when I travelled, the tram had to be in the station well away from the QR train track whenever a train was due to go past.

Any updates to this would be welcome.

Richard

I enjoyed a visit to the Archer Park museum last August and greatly admired the Purrey steam tram. However, since my visit was on a Wednesday I didn’t see it operating.

The video implied that it gets to operate on Sundays on the QR track down Dennison St. Is that so? A nice, if very modest, example of tram-train integration.

My partner and I stayed in the Dennison Boutique Hotel, former QR offices, and I got to witness heavy freight trains to Cairns using the same street trackage. The only example in New Zealand of in-street “heavy" rail operation is the Bay of Islands Vintage Railway in Kawakawa, Northland, on an isolated remnant of the former NZ Railways line to Opua.

What other examples are there in Australia of heavy rail in paved track in the street?
