Rogue train fails to stop at Chatswood amid Sydney Metro teething issues May 31, 2019 156 comments. As the new Sydney Metro Northwest's first working week draws to a close, teething problems that beset the new driverless trains are continuing to bug commuters using the line.Passengers arriving at Chatswood station about 7.45am during Friday morning peak found themselves stuck on a rogue train that stopped at the platform with its doors closed for about five minutes, then continued past the platform and away from the station towards the city.A crowded platform for Metro services at Epping station about 8am on Monday.  Credit: Peter RaeThe train eventually stopped again and, after another five minutes, turned back, dropping all passengers on the metro platform heading in the opposite direction – where passengers travelling west were waiting to board."So we've got to get off the train with all the other people trying to get on the train, then go down the escalator then across the station back up the other side to get on the train to go into the city," Daniel Timms, 29, said."It was just a horrible morning to be totally honest."Mr Timms said passengers on board the rogue train were frustrated that they weren't being told what was going on."There was a metro staff member on board but no one was really telling us anything," he said. The issue caused him to arrive at work about 30 minutes later than usual, he said. It's not the only problem the Metro had on Friday. Earlier in the morning, a power failure between Rouse Hill and Hills Showground halted trains from 5.20am, which had to be replaced with buses from Tallawong to Castle Hill until power was restored about 6am and services resumed.Delays to North Shore Line services following urgent signal repairs compounded the issues facing the metro line during the morning peak.A spokesman for Sydney Metro said the sytem "recovered quickly - as it is designed to do - after experiencing two technical issues" on Friday morning."Teething problems are to be expected on a new major railway and Sydney Metro apologises to customers."Almost 300,000 people have used Sydney Metro so far in its first five weekdays, and more than 440,000 since its opening day on Sunday, the spokesman said.NSW Transport Minister Andrew Constance said, "People need to understand this is a brand new system."We always warned there would be teething issues but on the whole this is a phenomenal system. I’ve been most impressed with the recovery of the metro system from these handful of minor incidents."The power and reliability of metro is incredible and I’m going to challenge anyone who wants to run it down. It’s an amazing amazing system."The metro line has suffered a number of issues throughout its first week in operation, despite running smoothly on Monday.Authorities have described as "normal" the frequent misalignment of doors that has forced trains to recalibrate their position before opening, causing a few minutes' frustration for commuters trying to disembark. But the new trains have experienced a number of other technical issues, including a breakdown, live transport data glitches and incorrect announcements. On Wednesday, a driverless train stopped moving between Epping and Cherrybrook after it lost communication with the network's control system about 12.50pm.A metro staff member on board the train had to take control and drive it to Cherrybrook, where doors initially failed to open. Customers were eventually able to disembark and the faulty train was taken back to the depot for testing..- So we are now just sitting randomly on the tracks down from Chatswood station. Any idea when we can get off the train?- 8.15 So we ended up heading back into Chatswood station but on platform 3. People waiting for the Tallawong service and everyone trying to disembark and head down the escalator and back to platform 1. Disaster. I need a coffee.Related Article North West Metro driverless train breaks down.
