That shot of 478 also brings back other thoughts, that period between the mid 60's to about 71 (the advent of 1041) the much vaunted maintainance had slipped a bit (though overhauls were still going on of course, the fleet just looked a bit dowdy) and indeed, there was huge pressure to replace the trams, especially around and just after the Brisbane closure (I still remember the headlines in the Herald about Brisbane replacing it's juggernauts with smooth gliding bus and Melbourne should do the same!!). Even when I joined the job in 1973, there was an air of uncertainty among staff until the Z's came along, think what you like about them (of course I have always preferred the W's), they breathed new life into the system and everyone picked up and had a more positive outlook for the future. It was an interesting time!

478 went to Memphis and was one of the trams to burn in their series of electrical fault fires.
