usenet was a distributed system - it had no owner or controlling authority.
By nature couldn't be controlled or monetized. It had to die. It was
from the days when the Internet was a cooperative venture between
educational institutions and the US military.
Google bought deja news, a group who tried to make money out of
archiving usenet. It's morphed into google-groups.
