A TEENAGE girl was dragged and trapped for about a minute between a tram and the platform after a horrific incident early this afternoon.

The young woman was rushed to hospital in a serious condition with abrasions on her legs and face.

The girl was seen running across the light rail tracks and trying to enter from the wrong end of the station as a tram approached the Nerang Street stop near the old hospital site, about 12.50pm, a G: Link spokesman said.

“The young woman was trapped for approximately one minute and assisted by passengers to remove her foot from the gap between the tram and platform with the tram driver also assisting immediately,” he said.

The woman was dragged about 3m before the tram could stop, witnesses told mygc.com.au.

The G: Link spokesman said the incident stopped trams headed south for about 30 minutes.

“This is a timely reminder for all of the community using the light rail to ensure you use the designated crossing on roads and entry points to stations,” he said.

“Trams run very regularly and a few minutes delay is not worth the risk of serious injury or worse.”

It took about six minutes for an ambulance to arrive on scene.
