I don't have much faith in Australian authorities being able to
adequately assess future needs, let alone build infrastructure that
will meet them. We'd rather spend $billions pouring concrete on half-
baked projects that over-promise and under-deliver, and blame the
Opposition when it doesn't work. Also, what works in Europe would be
impossible to do here, because they take public transportation
seriously and here it's an afterthought to appease a handful of voters.
(Cynicism/sarcasm aside though, I do agree though that we should follow
world best practices instead of reward incompetence like we currently
do. When it comes to trams, the Czechs get it 100% right. When it comes
to on-time running or high-performance heavy rail, ask the Swiss or
Japanese for advice.)
