Tony, at this stage I don’t have the slightest interest in travelling to New South Wales for any reason at all. However Melbourne on Friday is another matter.

Regarding university training, it seems to me that no universities or any other recognised forms of education exist in the western world in relation to teaching best tramway practices.

So governments and promoters grab the next best thing, namely railway-trained engineers and of course they can’t see anything beyond their blinkered massive railway standards.

Probably the greatest malaise is the know-nothings at various levels of government and industry who claim that they are building something radically different from the tramways of Melbourne so compound their ignorance by not looking in that direction. Not that everything Melbourne does is perfect, but obviously it would be a good starting point in seeing what infrastructure does and does not work effectively for street vehicles which are clones of Melbourne tramcars.

Last night I was looking at a photo sent by a friend which showed an overhead mast at the Bundoora tram terminus, and it looked to be all but identical to the Gold Coast one I published earlier in the evening.

I so I would say that CPB (Stage 2 contractor) does have some insight into Melbourne tramway practices. Maybe they have won track relaying projects in Melbourne. Perhaps somebody local will know the answer to that.

Regards,

Next time you're in Sydney Richard, go and look at High St Randwick, or around Eddy and Chalmers, or through the parklands and you'll see what that French one looks good against! Australian engineers are complete knuckleheads.. Aesthetics or environmental "fit" is obviously not part of their university training.
