I used to refer to the 1861-1866 Pitt St horescar line as the "1st
generation" but I stopped because I didn't think anybody else did!
There should be a generic name for the type of electric tramway found in
most cities from the late 19th century till the mid-20th - DC motors,
high-floor etc - "classic trams"??!! Trams like the Melbourne C/D/E etc,
Sydney CAFs, Variotrams etc are "modern trams" - low-floor, VVVF AC motor
drives etc
Melbourne currently has an overlap between "classic" and "modern" trams.
