I can’t see the Newcastle system expanding if it continues to be battery operated.

I would see it as a start-up for a larger system. Perhaps if they presented a case for that at the beginning, it wouldn't attract this sort of criticism. Quite obviously it looks a little ridiculous on its own and a bus could do the job for now. It also gullibly provides CAF with a free demonstrator for their technology. Perhaps CAF should be contributing to the cost.
