Cable track and Electric trams
  Tram Gunzle

Your 'Guessometer' is in fine fettle, Mal !
However it was the Swanston and Elizabeth Street tramlines that were
connected in 1924 after the cable tracks North of Lonsdale Street were
converted to electric trams.
When the rest of Swanston Street was electrified in 1926, the
Collingwood/North Carlton cable lines in Lonsdale Street were extended
across Swanston Street (another cable/electric crossing like the one in
Flinders/Market Sts) to use the new link as City terminus, outside Myer's
Emporium.
Due to the way the cables were oriented in the tunnels (never directly
below the slot - always to one side or the other) this section from
Swanston to Elizabeth had to have the cable sheaves moved to the opposite
side - the only time this occurred in Melbourne.
