Re: 1950s Christmas
  Tram Gunzle

Although the W2 Christmas scenes are genuine, the policeman wiping his brow
looks staged - back-projected possibly ?
The resolution of the film clip is not that good (but then, neither are my
eyes !) so the insignia on his helmet is not clear - could be NSW or
Victoria Police (Tenez le Droit), and the pith helmet is typical of the
era; the service number is high enough to indicate Victoria or NSW, but the
lack of shoulders patches does not seem to tally.
The post-and-sign safety zone is of a type used for trams in several cities
throughout Australia - Melbourne, Sydney, Geelong . . .
Two significant buildings in the background should be able to be identified
by locals: the one directly behind the officer appears to be a corner
department store, with a name ending in 'folds' (Bakerfolds ?), but again
not clear.
The other is T&G, however the frame excludes the tower. This cannot be
Melbourne, as the T&G is in Collins St (on the South-West corner of Russell
St) at the top of the hill from Swanston St, and Collins St has prominent
trees along the footpath at that point. Too tall for Geelong, could this be
Sydney ? If so, then 'Ladies in Black'is not so far from the mark.

p.s. david mcloughlin, New Zealand, despite the cramped conditions, I would
advise you not to leave your basket as you will find the canoe very prickly
and without means of steering or propulsion !
