That crossing dated from the closure of the City Rd cable trams in 1937.
It's the only example I can think of where a piece of cable tramway was re-used for electric trams.
It would have been lifted and relaid for the wider track centres. Perhaps the depression years forced this re-use as an economy measure.
I have attached a pic by Dave Hinman made in 1969. I think the crossing was replaced in the mid 1970s, but can't find an actual date.
By the way (in pedant mode) 956 is an SW6.
