Last week a Melbourne correspondent sent me the images below.

I sent this information to my contact in CPB who currently is doing track maintenance on Stage 2 of the GC Light Rail project as per their contract with the government.

This work includes a short stretch of track approaching the Gold Coast hospital stop from the north where there are significant rail corrugations of unknown cause. I thought that maybe installation of a device like this one in Melbourne may be of interest . You will see his reply below.

Hi Richard,

Thanks for the email, it was a very interesting read. I’ll be sure to pass this onto G:link for their information.

Our maintenance works on stage 2 will continue for approximately another week.

Cheers Kyle

Hello Kyle,

I rode all of Stage 2 today and at least half of the grinding has been done.. The noisier bits were probably done very recently and are sure to quieter fairly soon. I noticed no rumble in these areas.

But more importantly, this just came in from a friend who is a present-day driver in Melbourne.

If that corrugated section at Olsen Ave keeps recurring, one of these units may solve the problem, but of course there would be haggling about who would pay for it but it may be the cheapest long term solution if no better way of keeping that wear under control is found. At the Melbourne location about 35 trams per hour go each way.

“Anyway, to tram stuff. It is all quite self explanatory by the photos. The solar powered lubrication unit is near the corner of Bowen Crescent.”

Regards,

Richard
