Yes but it was a construction railway to build forts to keep off the Russians but only existed for a few months after 1882, about 3 miles long and never really used. It was not a passenger railway and therefore in this exchange of information doesn’t really count

You missed one railway - the military railway linking the coastal forts started at the St Leonards Railway Yards. Blue on the rough map attached.

Quite a history there John.

I probably heard before but have since forgotten whether there was a basic reason why the Glenelg tram line survived when all others were scrapped?

• 1879: Glenelg and South Coast Tramway Company opened its Glenelg – Marino Railway.

• 1880: Glenelg – Marino Railway closed.

• 1883: HORSE TRAMS COMMENCED. Glenelg, New Glenelg and Somerton Tramway Co Ltd (GNG&ST) opened its Glenelg – Somerton Horse Tramway.

• 1884: Glenelg, Brighton and Marino Tramway Co Ltd (GB&MT) opened its Glenelg – Dover (South Brighton) Horse Tramway.

• 1885: Glenelg – Somerton horse tramway closed.

• 1899: The two Adelaide – Glenelg Railways were taken over by the South Australian Railways (SAR).

* 1914: Glenelg – Dover horse tramway closed.
* Early 1929: The South Terrace – Glenelg Railway was closed for conversion to a tramway by the MTT. A temporary bus service was introduced to serve the Forestville area but closed after a short period.
* Late 1929: Glenelg Tramway opened and North Terrace – Glenelg Railway closed.

There was a Glenelg and South Coast Tramway Company that operated from Marino to Glenelg.

I believe it had a steam motor, but take this with as many shovels of salt as you like, since I can't recall any details.

What were the first trams in the Glenelg area? Were there horse trams? A coastal steam tramway? Or were the H class electrics in 1929 the first?

The Adelaide and Suburban Tramway Company had quite a few turntables on its routes for turning its single-ended horse cars. These are denoted by circles on the late Chris Steele’s track map of Adelaide’s horse tramways (attached). Some depots also had them – see small inset diagrams

Turntables have a distinguished place in tramway history as pretty-much the first method of turning a tram. Other early methods included pivoting the body on the chassis and swinging it around the other way. It wasn't until the 1860s that horse trams were redesigned by turning the stairs/entrances to the sides so that the horse could be attached to either end. Although Sydney's Bridge St turntable was a pretty late entry, I wonder if it was the first (or only) turntable in Australia to be used in actual passenger operations, as opposed to workshops etc?
