Re: Restaurant tram services suspended

Quite! I hope this rot doesn’t spread to Christchurch.

Since all the accidents which have ever happened in Melbourne have involved vehicles which are NOT restaurant trams, I assume they will be immobilised as well ...

Brent Efford – just a tourist (i.e. a potential customer)

For years these miserable foreigners who run the Melbourne tram service have been putting the screws into the Restaurant Trams, surely a Melbourne icon.

I drove ex W2 442, the original Restaurant a number of times in the late 1980s. The itinerary was quite an adventure, after picking up at Nolan St/Southbank Bvde, a little time in the city (I forget exactly where), then we went out to Toorak, right into Glenferrie Rd then down to Balaclava Junction, left turn into Blalclava Rd then Shunt. This was to keep the toilet outlet and loading doors on the correct side. Then to St Kilda Luna Park via Carlisle St, then the unload in Nolan St/Southbank Bvde via St Kilda Rd, Park St, Kingsway, and Stuart St.

More recently until today, it was pickup at Port Junction, Shunt at the Casino, to Fitzroy St via the dark back streets used by Route 12, then around to the Acland St Route 96 terminus, then back again. Absolutely pathetic.

I have been forwarded the attached notice about the end of Melbourne's restaurant trams.

This is an outrageous over reach by Yarra Trams management.

There has never been an accident involving restaurant cars and the appeal to safety is unsustainable on the basis of evidence.

I'll be writing to my local MP and encourage others in Melbourne to do the same.
