The curious Kiwi fate of a Melbourne W2
  David McLoughlin

The W2 in these photos, derelict but complete with trucks, has appeared in
an empty lot (we call them sections) outside the obscure North Island NZ
country town of Masterton, 100kms north of Wellington. It has only
recently been put here, as I go past here fairly regularly and would not
miss something so familiar! I'd never seen it before today and I spotted it
instantly while driving at 100kmh along the adjacent State Highway 2 south
of the industrial area just before the town.

I got as close as I could to it (it is behind a wire fence) but could not
see any fleet number, including the fleet number normally found below
the headlight (the headlight was missing too). It does not seem to have
the tail-light sets added to all operating pre-1956 trams from about 1970,
so this lack might help identify it. It has a lot of graffiti.

It would be interesting to know how it got here. I don't think many W2s
made it to New Zealand.
