Re: Abandoned Track in Melbourne?
  Mark Skinner

One of the things I notice about Australia vs Europe is that in Australia,
if something is abandoned or superseded, it is demolished or scrapped quick
smart.

However, travelling through Europe, it's quite common to see obviously
abandoned track and buildings just left to rot. The sight of old
locomotives, steam, diesel and electric, just shunted off to a siding
rusting away and overgrown by trees and shrubs as high as the locos is
commonplace.

On one trip to Prague, I came across a section of track that hadn't seen a
tram for years. The rail surface was pitted, and in parts totally covered
by dirt. There was grass growing up through the cobbles, cars were parked
over parts of it, and the overhead had that disused look, though it was
still in place. Next year though, it was in use for short workings due to
trackwork.

Maybe Melbourne is just taking on this aspect of European culture.
