Architecture is also art and Fremantle West End is a work of art. A true
artist wouldn't deface the art of others. This reminds of the efforts to
portray ugly graffiti as "street art" and thus an art form, which it may
well be if it's just painted on canvas, but not when it's applied over
other good design. These graffiti "artists" (of which this yellow-stripe
guy is just an officially-sanctioned version) form international gangs and
go around the world tagging, not only trains and the likes, but entire
historic public areas.

Another smaller example I recall from where I used to live in Sydney was
that a local garden centre had a delivery pantech van on which their
in-house art enthusiast had painted a beautiful garden scene. One day it
was horribly "tagged" - an "artist" destroying another (real) artist's
work. Frankly, I don't feel too much different about the crappy stuff
applied to the Melbourne "art" trams, not to mention AOA of course. Art has
its place and talent, not mediocrity, should rise to the top. Unfortunately
Fremantle has one of those lefty councils but it's far too important a
place to be left in the hands of airheads. I keep my fingers crossed that
some new stupid flash-in-the pan thing hasn't appeared every time I visit
there.

Tip: the 360 degree-view from the war memorial at Monument Hill behind
Fremantle is stunning. The Red CAT takes you part of the way up there.
