Re: Tramway trivia - another Melbourne rarity

The ability of low floor trams and buses to share the same stops would be an essential attribute for light rail if it is ever to come to pass in central Wellington. In some places that ability would be necessary for tram-bus interchanges, because there would be no space for separate platforms.

I took photos of buses and trams sharing the same stop in Jetty Rd, Glenelg, in 2012 to make the point. No opposing platform in that particular case.

Possibly the Polish drivers are better trained than the Aussie suburbans.

My brother drove country buses of the Greyhound etc etc variety for years, and is a driver trainer. I asked him about the feasibility of passing through tram stops like this. He just guffawed and said that many outback roads in Queensland at one time were about that lane width, and passing at 80-90kph wasn't unusual.

This was discussed a couple of years ago and there are couple of reasons for this.

The most important one is that the opposite tram platforms are too close together for a vehicle the width of a bus to legally go through.

Also it would mean training all bus drivers to go through the stops particularly in tram replacement situations and it’s not worth training hundreds of drivers who may need to use that knowledge once in a blue moon. That’s what a worker in the operation section told me.

Is there a reason for that policy?

Melbourne has a clear policy of not sharing tram and bus stops.

The only shared stop I was aware of was in Queensbridge Rd, near the
casino, where there is limited space.

I have just noticed another - only one stop away from 'my stop' in Essendon..

The orange and green stop markers indicate it's for buses and trams.

It's the last bus stop on the Ivanhoe to Essendon Station route and
would almost only ever be a set-down stop for buses.
