It's not just trams either.

My work has just moved into a new building with a brand new lift (made
in Turkey, but a major brand, occasionally comes up with error messages
in Turkish!)

It jerks on take off - because it releases the brake THEN turns on the
motor. So the car noticeably drops when it starts to move. Probably most
people don't even notice it, but as some one who also pays attention to
how trams start and had the 'cut a notch then release' drummed in when a
trainee driver, this sort of thing shouldn't be happening.
