Re: 49% of Victorians never use PT: Skynews

When I was in Armidale many students would insist on finding that someone to drive them from Uni into town. Personally I felt more independent catching the local bus which was quite cheap and didn't require me to inconvenience someone else.

My manager who is based in Melbourne has said to me "oh, you catch public transport, will that ever change?"

(Actually in a way I'm probably saving my employer transport costs)

For me as a youngish person a major barrier is the cost of just getting a licence. If you haven't got someone to teach you/ supervise you the cost of getting enough lessons/to make up the required hours is astronomical. Buying a used car on it's own would be cheaper than just getting the licence. I've been very start/stop in relation to getting a licence because of the cost and having to work around other commitments.

I understand that governments want to reduce the road but maybe it would be fairer to offer new drivers a restricted licence that allowed new drivers to only drive on nearby roads eg to their workplace and/or the nearest railway station. This would enable to drivers to practice and have the benefit of a car where they most need it.

Another goal I have at this stage is getting overseas more which again is cheaper than getting a licence. Strangely my heart seems more set on getting myself to far flung places than driving to just parts of NSW that I am mostly somewhat familiar with.

In inner Sydney I mostly don't need a car as public transport is pretty accessible and convenient but a car would be helpful when in country areas.

People have also said to me that a car is expensive to run/"keeps you poor".. I am yet to have personal experience but the cost of running a car is something that worries me a little.

I would have thought that tradespeople would need a car more because of the nature of their work.

I do wonder if there would be merit in offering job seekers some free public transport use not to gunzel full time but to encourage them to take whatever little jobs they can find. Some jobs may only be worth doing if they don't have to take the travel costs out of any earnings.

I'll be sorry if they take Sky News away from railway stations. I see Mal's point about it possibly being payback. I would love to subscribe to Foxtel and get Sky News at home but the price of a Foxtel subscription is also astronomical.

And yes, I enjoy enjoy travelling by tram, rail, water, air and sometimes even by bus.

Regards

Geoffrey

Growth of car ownership is flattening out, as is car use per capita and - most significantly I think - acquisition of driving licences by the young. The last census showed quite markedly that the average age of licence-holders is increasing. They're not being replaced by the young taking up licenses (tell me about it as I have to act as chauffeur to various young adults!).

I think many of the non-users see contempt for public transport as something they were forced to use while travelling as a student.

I know that quite a few people object being crammed into a vehicle with their bodies pressed against others.

This is partly shown by people who prefer to stand on public transport than sit next to a stranger. It is quite obvious on the Gold Coast Tram.

Many see it as an inferior form of transport only used by the scum of the earth.

I saw on the news a few nights ago that sales of motor vehicles is dropping in all states except I think it was Western Australia.

Does anyone have recent figures on what percentage of young people is not buying their own motor vehicle because they prefer to play with their mobile phones etc on public transport?

No doubt many other reasons exist.

The report smells strongly of 'payback' for Sky News being removed from public transport stations recently.

However, I must say that I am surprised at the resitance of some people to use public transport - even when it's free!

I'm running training for tradespeople working on the life extension program on Melbourne trams.

Most of them are new to the industry. The tradies get a free PT pass as part of their package, but I don't think many bother to use it. That's partly out of habit - many used to drive to work at car factories - partly because their early starts which means PT services are a bit spread out time-wise, but mostly because they are just unfamiliar with what's possible.
