We seems to be genetically inclined to try to make meaning without maths!

I lived in multicultural Malaysia for a while.
Chinese Malaysians always wanted a car number plate with 8s in it - the more the better.
The Mandarin Chinese word for 8 apparently sounds like the word for prosperity.

They always avoided car number plates with 4.
The Mandarin Chinese word for 4 apparently sounds like the word for death.
Malaysian Indians had no such qualms, so if your saw a car with 4 in the rego it was almost always driven by an Indian Malaysian.

Melbourne's SW6 888 survives in part because someone was savvy enough to recognise its value as a tourist attraction.

By the way, if you happen to like the Melbourne 'City Circle' cigarette carton livery of maroon and gold, get your pics ... its days are limited.
