It is very much a case of (changing the wording slightly!) – “you can have any trackform you like, as long as it is concrete”.

Who has shares in concrete manufacturing?!

One submission recommended that to ensure maximum positive environmental benefits, it should be a condition of approval that grassed trackform be the preferred application in the Centennial Parklands, Randwick Racecourse, Moore Park and similar CSELR traversed areas.

Consideration was given to grass bed track during the development of the definition design. While acknowledging that grass bed track could provide some benefits with regard to visual and landscape amenity along the alignment, the ongoing maintenance of the grass bed tracks, in particular watering requirements, was not considered to be economically viable or environmentally sustainable in the long term.

The Swedish publication “Modern Stadstrafik’ (Modern Tramways) has recently published an article covering the newly opened extension to Strasbourg, France’s light rail system.

This extension extends the French system across the River Rhine and the German border and has to comply with both French and German system and operational standards.

Subsequent posts will cover the relevant pages of the magazine. which reveal a totally different picture and approach to that of TfNSW/PB. Note the extensive and attractive use of grass track and the impressive design of the bridge across the river.
