RE: SW6 in original condition

859 rings a bell with me. It was probably1947 or 1948 that I sought 859 - 863 that were ‘missing’ from my tram record of the time. I cycled across Melb looking for them --- finally found them at the ex Coburg Depot. Strangely I associated them with ‘pie and sauce & a lemon tart’ for I was sitting in a small café when 859 pulled up outside, an exciting discovery!

Subject: [TramsDownUnder] SW6 in original condition

This pic is the last of the Melbourne pics from our anonymous source.

It shows 859 in original condition at the old terminus of route 15 in
Moreland Rd. which opened in 1936. The railway crossing is just behind
the photographer, and the line down Cameron St to Brunswick Depot is
evidenced by the overhead visible above the tram.

The terminus was later moved to the depot to free traffic flow in
Moreland Rd in 1957 and the stub terminus was removed in 1972. The shop
at right (on the railway reserve) is long gone.

As well as the dash canopy lighting, 859 has the short lived T pattern
reflectors. With only the destination box as a 'tail light' the trams
needed to be more visible at night. Later the drivers bulkhead was
painted white and the destination box cover left oipen to provide a bit
more light at the back. Real tail lamps began to be fitted in nthe
early 1970s
