Despite knowing the intentions of the MMTB to scrap the car, the TMSV management of the day did nothing to stop this happening or retain the car for preservation.  It was towed out of Malvern to Preston and scrapped.

I was actively involved with the TMSV at the time of the sad demise of No 5 (late 1966) and my recollection was that we were surprised to find No 5 gone from the little group of historic trams at the back of Malvern Depot when we turned up for a weekend work party.

I attach my pic of it in 3 road at Malvern in  1964.

As I recall, the TMSV had assumed that the car would be given to us, but no-one actively pursued a formal application and suddenly it was gone.
I'm quite confident that it would have been a different story if the TMSV had been aware of the imminent scrapping.

Mal Rowe - who reckons it's wise to be cautious about 'war stories' from the past of the TMSV, as many are about as reliable as asking the Coalition about the past achievements of Labor govermnents (or vice versa)
