I recently came across the attached map (which is part of a map supporting the 1945 proposal to extend the West Preston tramway). It reminded me that at that time, the only East-West tram lines in the CBD were in Flinders St and Collins St!

I had a play with the map I sent to TDU last Sturday.

The attached version is an animated gif showing the central city tram lines of 1945 and today.
You may need to download it to see the animation.
The green lines are new electric tramways built between 1945 and now.
I did overlook the change from Batman Ave to Russell St extension, but my excuse is that this ia a re-routing. (I actually forgot it when I made the gif)

In the period after WW2, when many cities around the world were reducing tramways Melbourne has had a substantial and sustained development of new services.

Mal Rowe - rather pleased with the output from the free gif online service at: http://gifmaker.me/ http://gifmaker.me/
