Re: TRAMWAY FIRE HOSE 'BRIDGES'

I thought that it was myself who put that photo on TDU a year or 2 ago.

The photo, from memory, was taken in Belgium.

It was set up as a joke. The fire brigade knew for certain that there would be no trains along that line so took advantage of the opportunity.

Those ramps would be a genuine product, but intended for use by motor vehicles.

My recollection of the "bridge" originally shown is that the 'ramps' either side of the track were polystyrene. The whole thing was
intended as a practical joke. Note that in the later version of a "bridge" the 'ramp' is lengthy - as it is in the temporary track
used in Melbourne.

Sydney’s original tramways had many emergency or reserve routes to allow tram movements to be diverted in emergencies. There were
old articles on these routes published in ‘Tram Tracks’ magazine by ‘Max Traction’ [nom- de-plume of a well known enthusiast].

It would be good if the APS power system was sectionalised at frequent intervals. This would allow

‘contra flow’ [bang road] tram operation as two single lines up to a safe distance on each side of the obstructed area.

It would not be good publicity to admit that there could be shortcomings in the new power system.

Does the illustration of hose bridges across a railway suggest that the railway could remain in use ?

Noel

Were you thinking of something like this?

Realistically, any fire that was severe enough to impact on tram lines these days would result in the closure of the street to all
traffic.

[TramsDownUnder] TRAMWAY FIRE HOSE 'BRIDGES'

Today, there was a serious building fire in George Street, Sydney near Circular Quay. Fire hoses crossed the street where the new
tramway using the APS power supply system will open soon. There are other old buildings in George Street likely to need protection
by fire hoses on future occasions.

Have the suppliers of the APS power system arranged for suitable “Fire Hose Bridges” to be available for similar emergencies ?

Noel Reed. Hoping that Sydney’s George St tramway will be successful.
