RE: RE: OT: Level crossings and motorists

Hi Tim,

Did you know that at the former Rooty Hill level crossing, a truck once started moving too soon while the boom gates were rising. It pushed a boom gate into contact with the 1500 volt DC overhead wires. The DC from the overhead, earthed to the rails through the relays above Rooty Hill signal box, destroying the relay room.

At the Wynyard S&T design office it was “all hands on deck” as we prepared emergency arrangements which resulted in the refuge loops being put out of use.

Noel Reed.

G'day all, First post for the year ! Regarding long queues of traffic at Level Crossings,

when I first moved back to Sydney, I lived in the western suburb of Rooty Hill, where the level crossing there (over 4 tracks I think) was closed more times than it was open !

Long queues would form to use the crossing, so most of the time I would go the long way 'round to go north of the line.

A bridge was built west of the crossing almost in my backyard as I lived on a 5 acre block . (exaggerating a bit here)

This was in the late 70s when there was a spate of level crossing closures & bridges being built. (Kingswood, Guildford & Doonside come to mind.)

Of course the most hated of the level crossings, is the soon to be closed Parramatta Rd one.

Regards,

Tim, in Sydney.
