Re: Re: Fish Market name?

Looking at the M&MBW (often referred to at the time as the 'Ward of Berks',
but now sorely missed !) maps on-line at SLV, there are a number of sidings
within the area concerned.
I have coloured some of the railway tracks on the attached composite map.
The line left Spencer Street goods yard area at a shallow angle, and ran
along the North side of Flinders Street extension (leaving room for another
track on the South side ?). It then deviated to the South well before the
intersection of Spencer Street, roughly opposite the Melbourne Harbour
Trust offices, passed under the Railway Viaduct and emerged at about the
South building line of Flinders Street; from there it paralleled the
Viaduct, ending just short of King Street.
Another siding parallel and to the North ran along-side, and adjacent to
the rear of the building in Flinders Street - this part of the building is
labelled "Meat and Produce Markets". The part of the building running along
the footpath of Flinders Street is labelled "City Market
Buildings/Warehouses". (All that has been described so far is marked in
RED).
From a point approximately half-way between Spencer and King Streets a set
of points diverged South on a very sharp reverse curve, so that this track
became perpendicular to the Viaduct at its mid-point. It then ended in a
short stub; another set of points led to a siding that ran back towards
Spencer Street, again parallel to the Viaduct, but at such a distance as to
allow for duplication of the Viaduct. Ending at the Spencer Street East
building line, another set of points joined to yet another siding that
paralleled this last track to its South, however there is no visible
head-shunt to give access. This last track lined the North side of a
platform for the "Fish and Game Markets". (These sections are marked in
GREEN).
Along the opposite side of the platform is a narrow-guage line marked "Tram
Line", which turned into the Fish Market building from both ends of the
platform; at the East end of the platform a set of points led into a
building curiously marked "Engine House" - against which rested (or entered
?) the stub from the rail line that passed under the Viaduct. (This last
lot is highlighted in BLUE).
All in all, a complicated little 'network' - this map seemingly posing more
questions than it answers!
