Murchison East was riddled with white ants after the railways left it way
too long to do anything about it. Avenel was also afflicted years ago and
the Benalla Works Foreman got stuck into it and that is why it still exists
today. Mind you one of the biggest problems with white ants years ago
(and it probably hasn't changed) is the presence of peppercorn trees.
These trees are hardy and grow well in all climates and so were grown
around most railway stations for shade. Unfortunately they also attract
white ants.
