Transferring complete trains of 3ft 6in coal wagons on 4ft 8 ½ flat wagons was done regularly when coal from Leigh Creek SA was railed south to Port Augusta. NG track was laid along a train of SG flat wagons. The NG train was then shunted onto the SG wagons using suitable ramps at each end of the transfer. Trains of NG loaded cattle wagons were transferred the same way. Sometimes, NG diesel electric NSU and NT class locomotives were transferred on these trains.

Hi all,

If the tram or train or whatever can be placed onto whatever gauge bogies are required such that it can formed into a normal freight train, there should not be a problem, and the load then becomes part of the train, which is how all the various railcars were transferred between Maryborough Qld and Perth WA.

OR as Tony showed in the photo, buses on flat-tops are another way of carrying out a transfer as well. The issue then becomes one of loading gauge and clearances through such convenient structures as tunnels.

In the 80s, when the MTT sold off the Leyland buses in their droves after the America’s Cup was done and dusted in Fremantle, they were loaded onto flats and railed ex Kewdale to the eastern states, where the buses saw further service (I think mostly) in private ownership. I have seen a photo of that but not sure where now.

I was thinking more of loading trams onto flat wagons and still having the correct clearances. Somehow I don't think the railways would be too happy with rolling trams directly along the tracks nowadays, especially on busy mainlines!

Rather like this train-load of trolleybuses:

Ummm,

Seems to work bringing NG trains on SG bogies by rail from Qld to Perth WA.

Just sayin’ sort of that it could be done.
