In ‘the good old days’ the following driver may have been given permission to push the tram somewhere out of the way, in this case to Flinders Street assuming 122 was on the Up. Service would quickly have been resumed. The only limiting factor these days would be trams with plastic ‘bumpers’. But now nothing is allowed to push anything.

One day when driving to St Kilda, upon arrival at Southbank Bvde I found the W in front had failed. So I told the tram ahead I would push him around that corner, and asked the driver behind to wait where he was. I gave the failed W a decent push and it rolled clear of St Kilda Rd. I then changed ends and returned into St Kilda Rd, and reversed again off to St Kilda. A delay of just a few minutes. With no radios, I just did it. Better for just one route to be blocked than 7 or so.
