Finally tracked-down where I had seen the line-breaker information: "The
Electric Railways of Victoria" by S.E. Dornan and R.G. Henderson (1979),
although I can't find my copy - and was reduced to resorting to Wikipedia
who, quoted them as "1, 8, 15, 46, 65, 78 coded ACM then AM until 1958;
allowed 850 Amperes for acceleration rather than 650."

One of my reliable contacts hadn't heard about that, but had heard was the
grids were enlarged to prevent the "surge" as the motor cars started, and
thought maybe the amperage change was the resistance load not the line
breakers. Just a thought.
