Re: Subn electrics

G’day David & All,

I think that the 850 amp Line Breaker was used on electric locos or Es.
I was also unable to find the email quoting this setting for EE doggies.

I concur with the 220 ton limit mentioned in metro workers for the Lilydale line.
A normal doggie set with a failed motor would have to battle similar conditions on the 1:40 grades of the Lilydale line.
i.e. trailing a 55 ton dead motor plus 4 trailers at 35 tons comes to near 200 tons and it would have had to stop all stations whereas EE trains had several express sections.

Also you had a vehicular limit of say 5 cars in addition to the motors, normally made up of BPL, ABL, AV/BV all of which weighed 30 tons plus 15 tons for a ZP if you were lucky.
All this proves that a higher rating of the line breaker would have not been required.

Regards
Kevin

Subject: [TramsDownUnder] Subn electrics

Recently there was a posting from Dean Filgate about 600 amp v 850 amp line breakers, I can't find the actually posting at the moment; might have deleted it.

Anyway a very recent discussion with a retired engineman and spark driver of many years, brought the comment that he had no knowledge of the 850 amp line breakers, neither did a spark driver friend of his, so we are all wondering just where that information comes from.
