Re: Melbourne's big summer holiday works

The section of track beside the Melbourne Cemetery in Lygon St has interested me for a long time.

It was in excellent condition when I drove Ws there around 1990. If there were any broken rail joints there, it was very few, and earlier this year there was not many.

More interesting is that the welded track joints remained silent, a massive contrast with the narrow northern part of Lygon St where the dished thermit welds made trams audible a long way away.

Because of the style of the construction, it would not surprise me if that good old track may date back to cable conversion days 80 odd years ago.
