RE: Help please: Melbourne tram no 727 - art tram?
  William Jackson

W5 727 in an earlier guise (is that a French word?) HHJ Photo.

The sign on Y&J's for Her Majesty's Theatre advertises Lewis Fiander in the
"Multi Award Winning Musical 1776" which with a little on line research
shows it as playing in Melbourne (and Sydney) in 1971. Under the heading
"Comedy", something June 9th but can't make out what. At least the date is
narrowed to first half 1971.

Hi Mal,

According to the document I have here, 727 was 'a theme car painted to
promote public transport'. Doesn't say who painted it, but it could have
been done at the then Met's Preston 'Shops?

Thanks to all who replied on and off list.

I think the mystery is solved.

It was painted in 1989 for the Spoleto Festival - but then overpainted later
as part of a Public Transport campaign - probably by the girls school.
